1921 : Enrico Caruso, Italian tenor, died at the age of 48 after several months of serious problems with his health. His death was attributed to peritonitis arising from a burst subrenal abscess.

1972 : Brian Cole American musician and vocalist, died of a heroin overdose in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 29. (The Association - founding member, bass guitar)

1983 : James Jamerson, American bass player, born James Lee Jamerson, died of complications stemming from cirrhosis of the liver, heart failure and pneumonia in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 47. He was long troubled by alcoholism.

1987 : Dave Martin, American musician, songwriter, singer, born David A. Martin in Dallas, Texas, in 1937 (precise date not known), died from a heart attack, at the age of 50. (Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs - founding member, bass guitar)

1997 : Fela Kuti, Nigerian multi-instrumentalist musician and composer, pioneer of Afrobeat music, human rights activist, and political maverick, born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, died from Kaposi's sarcoma which was brought on by AIDS, in Lagos, Nigeria, at the age of 58.

2001 : Ron Townson, American vocalist, born Ronald Townson, died of renal failure at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 68. He had been fighting a kidney disease for four years. (The 5th Dimension)
