This Day in Music History
1964 : Sam Cooke, American recording artist, singer-songwriter and entrepreneur, born Samuel Cook, was shot dead in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 33. The person who shot him claimed it was in self defence, which was officially accepted. The details of the case involving his death have remained in dispute.

1998 : Lynn Strait, American singer and lyricist, born James Lynn Strait, died in a car accident in Santa Barbara, California, at the age of 30. (Snot)

2012 : Ravi Shankar, Indian musician and composer who played the sitar, born , died in San Diego, California, at the age of 92. He had suffered from upper-respiratory and heart issues over the past year and underwent heart-valve replacement surgery on 6 December 2012.
