1899 : Gussie Davis, African-American songwriter, born Gussie Lord Davis, died at his home in Whitestone, New York, the age of 36. Some sources state he died on 18 October 1899. He was the first popular black Tin Pan Alley composer.

2011 : Ralph MacDonald, Trinbagonian-American percussionist, song-writer, musical arranger, record producer, steelpan virtuoso and philanthropist, died of lung cancer in Stamford, Connecticut, at the age of 67.
