1954 : Johnny Ace, American rhythm and blues singer, born John Marshall Alexander, Jr., died of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound backstage during a concert in Houston, Texas, at the age of 25. According to bass player Curtis Tillman who witnesed the scene: "Johnny Ace had been drinking and he had this little pistol he was waving around the table and someone said 'Be careful with that thing...' and he said 'It's okay! Gun's not loaded... see?' and pointed it at himself with a smile on his face and Bang!"

1995 : Dean Martin, American singer, film actor, television star and comedian, born Dino Paul Crocetti, died of acute respiratory failure resulting from emphysema in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 78.

1998 : Bryan MacLean, American singer, guitarist and songwriter, born Bryan Andrew MacLean, died of a heart attack in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 52. (Love)

1998 : Damita Jo, American actress, comedian and lounge music performer, born Damita Jo DeBlanc, died suffering of a respiratory illness in Baltimore, Maryland, at the age of 68.

2006 : James Brown, American recording artist and musician, born James Joseph Brown, Jr., died of congestive heart failure resulting from complications of pneumonia in Atlanta, Georgia, at the age of 73.

2008 : Eartha Kitt, American singer, actress, dancer and cabaret star, born Eartha Mae Kitt, died from colon cancer in Weston, Connecticut, at the age of 81.

2009 : Tony "T-Bone" Bellamy aka Anthony Bellamy, Native American musician and guitarist, born Robert Anthony Avila, died of liver failure in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 63. (Redbone - lead guitarist, pianist, vocalist)

2009 : Vic Chesnutt, American singer-songwriter, born James Victor Chesnutt, died from an overdose of muscle relaxants in Athens, Georgia, at the age of 45. At 18, a car accident had left him partially paralyzed. He attempted suicide three or four times before.
