1982 : Thelonious Monk, American jazz pianist and composer, born Thelonious Sphere Monk, died of a stroke in Englewood, New Jersey, at the age of 64.

1998 : Bob Merrill, American songwriter, theatrical composer, lyricist and screenwriter, born Henry Robert Merrill Levan, committed suicide in Culver City, California, at the age of 76. (Not to be confused with the jazz trumpeter.)
