1941 : Hamilton Harty, Irish composer, conductor, pianist and organist, born Herbert Hamilton Harty in Hillsborough, County Down, died of cancer in Hove at the age of 61.

1980 : Bon Scott, Scottish-born Australian rock musician, born Ronald Belford Scott, died after a night of heavy drinking in East Dulwich, London, at the age of 33. The coroner's report lists "death by misadventure" as the cause of his death. (AC/DC - lead singer)

1998 : Grandpa Jones, American banjo player and "old time" country and gospel music singer, born Louis Marshall Jones, died after suffering two strokes in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 84.
