1959 : Buddy Holly, American singer-songwriter and a pioneer of rock and roll, born Charles Hardin Holley, died along with bandmates Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson in a small plane crash near Mason City, Iowa, at the age of 22.

1959 : Ritchie Valens, American singer, songwriter and guitarist, born Richard Steven Valenzuela, died along with bandmates Buddy Holly and J.P. Richardson in a small plane crash near Mason City, Iowa, at the age of 17.

Ritchie Valens

1959 : J.P. Richardson aka The Big Bopper, American disc jockey, singer and songwriter, born Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr., died along with bandmates Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens in a small plane crash near Mason City, Iowa, at the age of 28.

J.P. Richardson

1967 : Joe Meek, English pioneering record producer and songwriter, born Robert George Meek, committed suicice by shooting himself after killing his landlady in London at the age of 37. He had often displayed paranoic behavior and been suffering drug use and attacks of rage or depression.

1978 : On the 19th anniversary of Buddy Holly's death, Holly's birth home in Lubbock, Texas, is miraculously saved from demolition by its new owner, who had, a few days prior, bought the house scheduled to be demolished on this very day. Neither the city nor the new resident had any idea of the home's significance.

2009 : Tom Brumley, American steel guitarist, died a week after suffering a heart attack, at a hospital in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 73. (Buck Owens and the Buckaroos, Stone Canyon Band)
