1981 : Harry Chapin, American folk-rock singer-songwriter, born Harry Foster Chapin, died in a car crash, possibly while suffering a heart attack, in Jericho, New York, at the age of 38.

1985 : Wayne King, American musician, songwriter, singer and orchestra leader, born Harold Wayne King, died in Paradise Valley, Arizona, at the age of 84.

1996 : John Panozzo, American drummer, born John Anthony Panozzo, died of gastrointestinal hemorrhaging in Chicago, Illinois, at the age of 47. He had been battling cirrhosis of the liver, as a result of chronic alcoholism, since 1983. (Styx)

2003 : Celia Cruz, Cuban-American salsa performer, born Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso de la Santísima Trinidad, died of brain cancer at her home in Fort Lee, New Jersey at the age of 77.

2008 : Jo Stafford, American traditional pop music singer and occasional actress, born Jo Elizabeth Stafford, died of natural causes in Century City, Los Angeles, California, at the age of 90.

2012 : Jon Lord, English composer, pianist and Hammond organ player, born Jonathan Douglas Lord. In 2011, Lord was found to be suffering from pancreatic cancer. He died at the London Clinic after suffering from a pulmonary embolism, at the age of 71. (Deep Purple, Whitesnake)

2014 : Johnny Winter, American blues guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer, born John Dawson Winter III. He was found dead in his hotel room in St. Gallen, Switzerland, two days after his last performance, at the Cahors Blues Festival in France, at the age of 70. The cause of Winter's death is not clear.
