1972 : Clyde Lensley McPhatter, American R&B singer, died during his sleep from complications of heart, liver and kidney disease brought on by alcohol abuse. He died in Teaneck, New Jersey, at the age of 39.

1986 : Benny Goodman, American jazz and swing musician clarinetist and bandleader, born Benjamin David Goodman, died from a heart attack in New York City at the age of 77 .
