1911 : James Bland, African-American musician and songwriter, died from tuberculosis in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the age of 56.

1982 : Cal Tjader, born Callen Radcliffe Tjader, Jr., American Latin jazz musician, died of a heart attack in Manila, Philippines, at the age of 56. He primarily played the vibraphone, but was also accomplished on the drums, bongos, congas, timpani and the piano.
