1979 : Eddie Jefferson, American jazz vocalist and lyricist, was shot dead outside the Baker's Keyboard Lounge in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 60.

1998 : Lester Butler, American blues harmonica player and singer, died of an overdose of heroin and cocaine in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 38. Two of his friends were convicted in his death with involuntary manslaughter.

2010 : Lena Horne, American singer, dancer, actress, civil rights activist and recording artist, born Lena Mary Calhoun Horne, died of heart failure in Manhattan, New York City, at the age of 92.
