1945 : Anton von Webern, Austrian composer and conductor, born Friedrich Wilhelm von Webern, was shot and killed during the Allied occupation of Austria in Mittersill, Salzburg, at the age of 61.

1985 : Cootie Williams, American jazz, jump blues and R&B trumpeter, born Charles Melvin Williams, died in New York City at the age of 74.
