Chicago's Twin Peaks released a nice little power-pop album in 2013 called Sunken, one that rewired a handful of classic Thin Lizzy riffs into agreeable new tangles. They were 19 or so when the album came out, and sounded possibly younger. On "I Found a New Way," from their upcoming Wild Onion LP, their influences are the same—you could start humming any number of Steve Miller or BTO songs over the heartily chugging, red-meat power chords that open the song—but the vibe is a little darker.
Singer Clay Frankel has discovered a new jackal-shriek in his upper register, making his vocals skid wildly between a Joe Jackson and an Iggy Pop impression. At the end of the song, he lets spit fly in all directions, sounding genuinely unhinged, and it throws an unsettling bundle of raw nerves into what is otherwise a pretty standard good-times keg-rocker.
